My very first adventure like this—7 days on a boat with 10 strangers, all brought together by a shared dream of kiteboarding on the Great Barrier Reef with @kitecruiseoz 🪁✨.
We set sail on a discovery kite cruise, exploring some of the most remote and magical corners of the GBR. 🌊 Our legendary captain, Brutus, shared stories that made the reef come alive, from ancient shipwrecks to hidden sand cays teeming with wildlife. By the end of the week? We became fast friends, still in touch, reminiscing about the insane experiences we shared.
You can catch the full 14-minute documentary from this trip on my YouTube channel. It was my first one to record and edit, so please be understanding;)
GBR Gems: The Kite Spots That Stole Our Hearts
Here’s a quick tour of the epic kiteboarding locations we explored, each with its own flavour:
Lizard Island – Private Paradise
The most remote luxury resort in the reef. Picture pristine beaches, unreal launch spots, and that “this-is-my-own-island” feeling. Lizard Island is also home to the endangered Lizard Island skink, historic Cook’s Look, and over 24 beaches perfect for adventure.

Hope Island – Palm-Fringed Serenity
A cute slice of paradise inside a national park. Palm-fringed, peaceful, and often deserted—you might be the only kiter out there. Ideal for serene, flat-water sessions while soaking in untouched tropical vibes.

Linnet & Martin Reefs – Nature’s Playground
Epic reef setups where timing the tides is everything. Kiteboarding above vibrant coral gardens and teeming marine life makes this spot unforgettable. Great for snorkel/kite combos—just pick your tide window carefully.

Spot X – Our Favourite Secret
Perfect wind, perfect flat water, perfect vibes. We’re keeping the location low-key, but trust me… it’s magic. Shallow crystal-clear water, steady winds, and untouched beauty made every session here unforgettable.

Eyrie Island – Downwinder Dream
A picture-perfect sand cay, perfect for starting a dreamy downwinder to Eagle Island. This spot has that wild GBR energy and makes you feel like you’ve stepped into another world.

Undine & Mackay Reefs – Crystal Clear Wonders
Ideal for kiteboarding over vibrant marine life, snorkeling, and exploring. Timing is key here too—the tides make all the difference in accessing these gems safely.

Turtle Islands – For the Brave
Entry was sketchy with sharp reef, so this one’s for those feeling adventurous. Definitely an experience for thrill-seekers willing to navigate a challenging approach.

Beyond Kiteboarding: Adventures All Around
This trip wasn’t just about kiting. We snorkeled above coral gardens, paddle-boarded, hiked on remote islands, and soaked up Queensland’s endless sun. The GBR is a playground for adventurers—kite, dive, snorkel, SUP, hike… you name it. Every location had a unique personality, from luxurious seclusion at Lizard Island to serene solitude at Hope Island and adrenaline-fueled reefs like Linnet and Martin.
Memories That Last
Seven days, ten strangers, countless sessions on turquoise waters, and endless laughs. This kite cruise reminded me that adventure isn’t just about places—it’s about people, moments, and the stories you create together.
Whether you’re chasing flat water, reef waves, or hidden sand cays, the Great Barrier Reef is a kiteboarding paradise. And with kitecruiseoz looking after you, all you need to do is show up, launch, and let the wind guide the adventure.
